Analysis of Relationship between Image Compression and Gamut Variation: JPEG and JPEG2000

چکیده

F bstract. Image compression schemes facilitate the transmission nd storage of data in an efficient form by reducing redundant image ata in the case of limited transmission bandwidth or storage space. owever, due to the irreversible nature of lossy compression, these chemes also introduce various types of color artifacts into the reonstructed image at a high compression ratio. Consequently, a hange in color information affects the gamut characteristic of the econstructed image. Accordingly, this article investigates the relaionship between the compression ratio and the gamut variation for reconstructed image using JPEG and JPEG2000. To analyze the elationship between the compression ratio and the gamut variation, 8 color samples from the Macbeth ColorChecker are initially used s representative colors for all colors due to their uniform distribution n CIELAB color space. Based on the color information shift for repesentative color samples, 12 natural color images, classified into wo groups depending on four color attributes, are used to investiate the relationship between the level of compression and the ariation in the gamut area for reconstructed images. After determinng the gamut areas for the decompressed images in relation to the ompression ratio, gamut fidelity is obtained using the ratio of nique colors relative to the gamut area. Finally, the optimal least quare method is applied to obtain fitted curves as an equation miniizing the error between the real data, the gamut area for the deompressed images, and the corresponding approximated alues. © 2009 Society for Imaging Science and Technology.
